Growing up, I wondered if I was alone in my weirdness. I guess I was
just waiting for the Internet to come along and help me find others of
my kind. I'm talkin' about you,
Boing Boing!
Case in point: Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra, which I discovered
a few weeks ago when Boing Boing
wrote
about their amazing cover of Britney Spears' Oops I Did It
Again. Imagine Britney as a German Rudy Vallee. (No, that
doesn't begin to describe it.) And Mrs. Federline isn't the only
artist (a term I use in its most generic sense) to get the Palast
treatment. Their versions of Super Trouper and We Will
Rock You are equally wonderful.
Sadly, none of their pop covers have made it to the iTMS, although I
am hopeful. But you can hear Max and the band in their element, doing
German pop from the 20s and 30s. And that's almost as good, if not
nearly so funny. And maybe if we ask real nice, maybe we can get
Max's
Hitpalast for ourselves.
